How Long is Longitude?

This graphic was created to explain a deceptively simple cartographic concept: while one minute of latitude always equals one nautical mile, the length of a minute of longitude changes dramatically depending on where you are on the globe. After learning this fact, I wanted a clear visual way to show why longitude behaves differently and why that difference matters.

The project is aimed at GIS users and cartography enthusiasts, particularly those early in their learning, who are often told “don’t analyze data in a geographic coordinate system” without a strong intuitive explanation. By visualizing the changing length of longitude with latitude, the map highlights why projected coordinate systems are essential for meaningful spatial analysis.

This was a rare project that came together smoothly, but it serves as a foundational reminder: understanding the geometry behind coordinates is just as important as knowing which buttons to click.
